Statement on Independence of the Judiciary – 30/01/2023

Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi, in reference to what was reported in the news regarding the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday 29th January, is disappointed. It should not be the case that members of the judiciary are in personal contact with the executive on any matter affecting or relating to the performance of their duties. This goes against the separation of powers, and is in breach of Rule 26 of the Code of Ethics of Members of the Judiciary (provided that the person in question did not seek permission from the Chief Justice or the Senior Magistrate). For these reasons, GħSL supports the statement of the Chamber of Advocates, and wishes to emphasise the importance of the independence of the judiciary, as well as the separation of powers.
